The next major breakthrough in computer technology came in the 19th century with the development of the analytical engine by Charles Babbage. Babbage, an English mathematician and inventor, is often referred to as the “father of the computer.” His analytical engine, designed in the 1830s, was a mechanical general-purpose computer that could perform complex calculations. Although Babbage never completed the analytical engine, his work laid the foundation for future computer development.

The 20th century saw a rapid advancement in computer technology. In 1941, Konrad Zuse, a German engineer, built the Z3, which is considered the world’s first programmable computer. The Z3 used binary arithmetic and had a memory capacity of 64 words. However, it was not until 1946 that the first electronic general-purpose computer, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), was developed. The ENIAC, built by a team led by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, was used primarily for military calculations during World War II.

In the following decades, computer technology continued to evolve rapidly. The invention of the transistor in the late 1940s paved the way for smaller, faster, and more reliable computers. The microprocessor, introduced in the 1970s, further revolutionized the computer industry by integrating the central processing unit (CPU) onto a single chip. This led to the development of personal computers (PCs), which became widely available to the general public in the 1980s.

Today, computers are an integral part of our daily lives, used in various fields such as education, healthcare, business, and entertainment.
