The superior paraaortic lymph nodes are located superior to the renal arteries, while the inferior paraaortic lymph nodes are situated inferior to the common iliac arteries.

The retroperitoneal lymph nodes are located behind the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. These lymph nodes are further divided into the paraaortic lymph nodes and the common iliac lymph nodes. The paraaortic lymph nodes are responsible for draining the lymphatic fluid from the abdominal organs, including the kidneys, adrenal glands, and part of the gastrointestinal tract.

The function of the para aortic lymph nodes is to filter the lymphatic fluid and remove any cancer cells that may have spread from the primary tumor. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, the para aortic lymph nodes are often examined to determine if the cancer has spread to these areas. In some cases, cancer cells may be found in the para aortic lymph nodes, indicating that the cancer has spread. This is particularly true for cancers that originate in the abdominal cavity, such as renal cell carcinoma, adrenal cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers. In these cases, the para aortic lymph nodes location is essential for planning the surgical removal of the affected lymph nodes and other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
